Instructions

Click on Printables for Sun Face template.

1.  Trace around the Styrofoam disc to make a circle from the construction paper. Cut out and set aside. To smooth the edges of the disc roll along the tabletop or use a scrap piece of Styrofoam.

With the pencil point draw a face on the Styrofoam. Working on one facial element at a time, draw a line of glue on the design and apply a piece of twine to the glue. Use straight pins to hold the twine in place until the glue dries. Hint: it may be necessary to use tweezers to remove pins while holding the twine securely to the Styrofoam.

2.  Cut a piece of aluminum foil large enough to wrap around the disc. Lightly cover the entire surface of the dull side of the foil with the black oil pastel. Lay the foil over the twine features on the Styrofoam then starting in the center of the face; carefully and gently push the foil against the raised twine areas. Work the foil into the crevices and around the twine. Wrap to the back of the disc. Use a paper towel to rub some of the oil pastel away. Smooth the flat parts of the foil against the Styrofoam.

3.  Cut 16 large triangles from the aluminum foil. These will be the sun’s rays. Run 8 of the triangles through the crimper. Arrange the rays on the construction paper circle. Glue in place.

4.  Fold 8 chenille stems in half. Twist the ends around a pencil. Insert the folded ends into the sides of the face.

5.  Glue the paper circle with the rays to the back of the disc. Add glitter paint to add dimension to the sun’s face.

6.  Glue a loop of twine near the top for a hanger, if desired.
