Limericks and St. Patrick’s Day go hand in hand so we thought it would be fun to create a St Patrick’s Day Limerick Lesson for all you Parents, Teachers and Home Schoolers. We’ve also supplied some limericks that we’ve created just for fun. Don’t be too critical, it’s all in fun.

Trivia:

Edward Lear, a famous author, made limericks famous with the “Book of Nonsense” in the 1800’s. This was a book full of silly limericks. Source: KidZone Poetry – Limericks

Supplies

• White Paper
• Pen or Pencil

Instructions

1. Limericks have five lines and a set rhythm
2. The first, second and fifth line rhyme and the third and fourth line rhyme and are both shorter.
3. The first, second and fifth lines have the same number of syllables as do the third and fourth lines.
4. I think it helps to start out with the first line and then have them write a list of words that rhyme with the last word in the line to help them think of something to write in the second line.
5. We’ve given some examples but have the kids try their hand at writing their own.  Remember they are supposed to be funny and nonsensical. We’ve supplied a blank page just for this purpose
6. It might be a good idea to have them write their poems on scratch paper until they are happy with the result.

The limericks will make great decorations for the bulletin board and the kids will love seeing what everybody wrote
