Conduct your at home Book Scavenger Hunt when it’s not possible to wander around the library. Most children have a collection of books, many of which they haven’t looked at in a long time. This Book Scavenger Hunt is a fun way for kids to rediscover old friends they may have set aside and half forgotten and a delightful adventure for all involved.

Trivia:

In 1744, John Newbery published A Little Pretty Pocket-Book. The volume was heralded as the true first book intended for children’s pleasure reading. Supplies:

• White Paper
• Pen, Pencil or Marker
• Clipboard (Optional)

Instructions

1. Print out a Scavenger Hunt worksheet for each child.
2. If using a clipboard, clip the sheet on and give each one a utensil to mark with.
3. Then turn them loose to find the books noted on the sheet.

Soon they will be scattered to find the books on the list and may even set aside a few to read after the hunt is over. Encourage each of them to pick a topic and write their own book at a quiet time. Who knows you may have a famous author in your midst.
