Starting the New Year Right
by Betty Bose
The New Year is a time for setting goals and looking back on what happened last year. It is a good time to help kids set achievable goals like learning the alphabet and other school related tasks. Show them how the process can be fun with our ABC Paper Chain.
Resolutions are often thought of as something we really don’t want to do but know we should. Why not focus on some resolutions that are rewarding too. Here are just a few suggestions:
Make Cat Pillows and take them to the local animal shelter. This can be a family project or one that is done with a troop or any other group.
Make Felt Tissue Holders for a nursing home. Many of the residents do not have relatives who visit on a regular basis.
Make a Patriotic Tissue Paper Wreath for a Veteran on one of our Patriotic Holidays or for no reason at all. Our older citizens who are shut in really appreciate the extra attention.
Of course, resolving to increase recycling efforts is always a good way to start the year and we have lots of craft ideas to make it even more fun. Here are just a few suggestions from our many Recycling Craft projects to get you started:
Recycled Bottle People: Have the kids make one to look like themselves or create a wacky friend to sit on the shelf. This recycles water bottles and leftover bits of yarn, fabric and felt.
Recycled Sea Life Creatures: Everybody has cardboard tubes from toilet paper, gift wrap and paper towels. Some companies are doing away with cardboard in their toilet paper rolls so this favorite craft material may disappear one day.
Puzzle Piece Aliens: As your children age, you find those old big puzzle pieces take on a new life recycled into cute aliens.
These are just a few suggestions to make 2013 a great year for everyone. Be safe, healthy and happy.
