Instructions

Begin by cutting out two identical hearts, using colored construction paper. If they're going in an envelope, make sure the size you choose fits inside.

Fold the hearts in half. Put the outsides of the fold of each valentine together, lay them flat, making sure the two valentines are lined up.

Punch a hole at the top and a hole at the bottom of both valentines. Run a long strand of yarn through the top hole and tie a knot at the hole. With the remaining yarn make a loop and tie with a bow. This gives you a hanging loop.

At the bottom punch another hole and tie a bow, securing the two hearts together.

Now you’re ready to decorate the hearts however you wish. On one of my hearts, I printed a fancy font on the computer and drew balloons around the words, cut them out and pasted them on my hearts, adding strings with a red pen. The message of love is in the balloons.

Since another of my recipients plays piano and trumpet, I made notes and pasted them inside the big heart with the message handwritten in the notes.

There are so many ways you can decorate your hearts – punching holes on the edges with a big needle, slip stitching around the edges with yarn, coloring, painting. Make them personal, about the things that interest your valentine. Make them easy or difficult, it's up to you.
